Water storage tanks are a vital component of water systems, providing water for daily fluctuations in system demand and fire flow. Water tanks may be constructed of steel, bolted steel, precast/prestressed concrete, cast in place concrete, or composite steel/concrete.
Mott MacDonald has extensive experience in the design of all types of new and upgraded water storage facilities.
We have also been responsible for the inspection and rehabilitation of tanks, including blasting and recoating, removing lead-based coatings (including containment systems), upgrading overflow and venting systems, upgrading ladders/handrails, and complying with OSHA and local regulatory requirements.
Our water storage tank services have included these:
- Hydraulic analysis
- Tank siting analysis
- Tank alternative analysis (ground level, standpipe, elevated)
- Preliminary/detailed design (tank, control valves, baffle design/CFD modeling, mixing/water quality considerations, site/overflow, structural foundations, security)
- Rehabilitation of existing tanks (inspection, conditions assessment, regulatory compliance, lead testing, design & preparation of plans and specifications)
- Construction administration & resident engineering
